Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2025: Oakville Meals on Wheels Volunteers Make Waves

National Volunteer Week (NVW) 2025 takes place from April 27 to May 3, and this year’s theme, “Volunteers Make Waves,” beautifully reflects the incredible power of volunteerism. Whether it’s a cheerful hello at the door, a warm meal delivered with care, or the steady commitment of showing up week after week, OMoW volunteers create lasting ripples of kindness that flow through our entire community.

Just like waves in motion, our volunteers at OMoW are a force of connection, compassion, and change.

What Is National Volunteer Week?

National Volunteer Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of volunteers across Canada. This year’s theme reminds us that every act of giving—no matter how big or small—creates momentum. Like water in constant motion, volunteers shift, grow, and evolve to meet the needs of their communities, building on the work of those before them and inspiring others to do the same.

At Oakville Meals on Wheels, our volunteers don’t just deliver meals—they deliver comfort, informal wellness checks, and moments of connection. They are the heart of our mission and the reason we can continue to drive care into the Oakville community.

Making Waves at OMoW: What Our Volunteers Do

Every weekday, OMoW volunteers head out into the Oakville community with nutritious meals in hand and compassion in their hearts. Some are drivers, delivering hot meals directly to clients’ doors, while others work as packers, ensuring each route is ready for the road.

On volunteers’ words:

“

““I volunteer at OMoW because seeing the appreciative faces of my clients and knowing I have brightened their day with a quick chat adds so much to my daily life.” ”

“

““I feel very fortunate to have my health, pension, family and time and want to help others not as fortunate… I feel good knowing that I have made someone’s day a little brighter and that I may be the only person they talk to that day!” ”

The Ripple Effect: Why Volunteering Matters

The act of volunteering doesn’t stop with the person giving their time. At OMoW, each delivery supports not just the individual receiving the meal, but also their loved ones and caregivers, offering peace of mind, community connection, and continuity of care.

Volunteering also strengthens the volunteer. It builds empathy, confidence, and community ties. It’s an opportunity for personal growth, professional development, and joyful moments of human connection.
